Weekend Getaway

updates

This weekend was supposed to go down as follows:

  1. I leave for Adam’s bachelor party at noon, drink my face off and sleep through the night
  2. Analia was going to have a slumber party to help her take care of the boys while I am off acting immature

As usual, the boys had alternate plans.

Lucas started crying unlike any usual cry in the morning. He was inconsolable, would doze off occasionally, but would wake to more crying. Around 10 I changed his diaper to see if that would help, which was when I found excessive swelling and firmness around his balls. Contrary to what you may think, this was not a good thing. It seemed logical his pain was caused by this so we took him to emergency.

It turned out Lucas has an ingunial hernia, where part of his bowels move into an area reserved for testes to drop. Very common and very fixable. They gave him a small dose of morphine so they could push it back. Everything went smoothly and he was visibly relieved.

Surgery came and decided to fix the hernia now, since it had been herniated for roughly 5 or 6 hours, so we were locked in to two nights stay. Lucas was pretty lethargic all afternoon and evening from the morphine and around 8 pm he gave us a serious scare. He had an apnea, so the amazing staff here decided it was best for everyone to move him to PICU (paediatric intensive care unit) for closer observation. He had an uneventful night, thankfully, and Sebastian loved the opportunity to have mami and dad to himself for the night.

This morning Lucas went in for surgery at about 10:30 and everything went as it should. He’s now back in our room recovering wonderfully, already showing signs of his old self. We’ll be here for the night and as long as there are no more “events” we’ll be on our way home tomorrow.

Not what we had planned for the weekend, but as we learned long ago, we roll with the punches. Thanks everyone for their support, especially Margo, Kylie, Karmina, Jennie and my mom who were all here last night and helped us through some frightening times. We get comments about how strong we are—which I question—but if we are it is because we draw that strength from our amazing support.

    Hey Chris and Analia,

Don’t ever question your strength, you are strong, you might not see it but it is there. You have brought these boys into this world and that in and of itself is strong. You loved these boys from the moment they were born, you have been with them every step of the way. That is strength. And you will just get stronger as time marches on. Keep up the wonderful work and love!!!
